Each activity we offer you is the opportunity for the pupils to product, create, discover actively...

To highlight the work made by the pupils, parents are invited to come to the abbey at the end of the last workshop in order to share a convivial time and to meet the team.

On site, a picnic area is at your disposal, as well as a room for lunch in the event of rain.

Visits

The discovery visit

This visit gives you an active and playful approach of the monument to get to know monasticism, especially the Benedictine and Cisterian orders. You will also learn more about the everyday life of monks, monastic hydraulics, roman and gothic arts, and more generally the evolution of architecture from Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The discovery visit was created with members of the Department for Education in order to meet the expectations of schools. Children will be asked to observe carefully and to use their ability to reason. The visit is interactive, they will exchange together, with their teachers and the guide. It takes place on the whole site of the abbey and can be adapted for classes of primary and secondary schools.

Duration: 2h

Awaken your senses

This visit is a true playful and sensorial exploration that will make you discover the abbey and its environment through the theme of mineral and vegetal. Children, will walk around the different areas of the abbey with a playful and educational device developed with representatives from the Department for Education. During the visit, several senses will be used to illustrate the guide's speech and to arouse interest. 

Educational objectives:
  • Explore the world: find your bearings.
  • Discover different environments (garden, source, monument).
  • Explore the living world (animals, insects).
  • Act, express yourself, understand through artistic activities.
  • Play with the voice (singing).
  • Draw to reproduce engraving.
  • Learn and assimilate specific vocabulary (monk, abbey...).
  • Count and use numbers.

Workshops

Workshop 1 - Stone cutting

An activity about stone to initiate pupils into a new artistic practice and to create awareness about built heritage.

Educational objectives:
  • Learn about stone cutting.
  • Acquire new vocabulary about roman art, gothic art and stone cutting.
  • Discover carved medieval decorations: plants, crosses...
  • Create your own sculpture.
Duration: 2h
Classes: from CM to secondary school.

Workshop 2 - Roman art and gothic art

An activity about art to educate pupils in medieval architectural styles.

Educational objectives:
  • Identify and compare roman and gothic styles.
  • Acquire vocabulary about architecture.
  • Discover and try out the different construction techniques of a roman arch and a gothic arch.
  • Create your own "small monster" model.
Duration: 2h
Classes: from GS to secondary school.

Workshop 3 - Calligraphy

An activity about writing to educate pupils in other forms of letters.

Educational objectives:
  • Discover the history of writing throughout the ages.
  • Learn how to use a reed pen.
  • Discover new alphabets.
  • Write your first name in calligraphy.
Duration: 2h
Classes: from CE to secondary school.
Don't forgt to bring: an old T-shirt, the workshop takes place preferably in the morning so the works have time to dry.

Workshop 4 - Illumination

An activity about medieval illumination to discover a new kind of art and to sharpen pupils' perception.

Educational objectives:
  • Discover the history, materials and techniques of illumination.
  • Learn how to create paintings like in the Middle Ages.
  • Create the initial letter of your name.
Duration: 2h
Classes: from CE to secondary school.
Don't forget to bring: an old T-shirt, the workshop takes place preferably in the morning so the works have time to dry, the teacher has to send us the list of the first names of the pupils who will do this workshop.

Workshop 5 - Medieval cooking

An activity about recipes to discover medieval food.

Educational objectives:
  • Discover medieval cooking and culinary art.
  • Discover the type of food eaten according to the social status.
  • Acquire new vocabulary.
  • Prepare and taste a simple recipe.

Workshop 6 - Coat of arms

An activity about the creation of a coat of arms to introduce heraldry to the pupils. It also insists on the continuity of this practice through contemporary logotypes.

  • Discover the heraldic science.
  • Acquire new vocabulary.
  • Wonder about your identity, origins, tastes.
  • Create your own coat of arms.

Workshop 7 - Magical plants - Discover the medicinal garden of Fontdouce

An activity about the medicinal garden (where the monks were cultivating aromatic and medicinal plants) to discover the role of plants in the Middle Ages and to identify them through games that will awaken the senses. Using magic, the sorcerers' apprentices will discover the world of magical plants and the art of making potions during culinary experience. 

Educational objectives:
  • Discover the different uses of plants in the Middle Ages.
  • Identify plants by seeing, touching, tasting or smelling them.
  • Discover the garden in a playful way through an attractive theme: magic.
  • Create your own potions.

Workshop 8 - Stained glass

An activity about the discovery of stained glass, from its creation to its evolution throughout history.

Educational objectives:
  • Discover stained glass, from Middle Ages to modern times.
  • Observe the different techniques: play of glass and play of light.
  • Understand the double function of stained glass: narrative and decorative.
  • Create your own stained glass using the technique of glass painting.

Treasure hunts

Little murders in Fontdouce (French)

For children from 9 to 13 years old

1305, the king of France has to meet the future pope in Fontdouce in utmost secret. A novice is found dead in the gardens... Who could have wanted to hurt this young man who was about to become a monk? How was this crime committed?

It's your turn to discover the culprit and his weapon through several riddles and clues left in the rooms of the abbey. We offer you 5 different scenarios

Seeking the treasures of the abbey

For children from 5 to 8 years old

With help of a neck strap gathering 15 photos of the abbey and its surroundings, children will be invited to open their eyes in order to find where the pictures were taken.

This game encourages children to explore every nook and cranny of the abbey. An entertaining way to discover the place.

Friar Matthieu lost his savings !

For children from 3 to 5 years old

For this treasure hunt, children will have to open their eyes and observe very carefully. Puzzles showing details of the abbey will have to be put together in order to find the treasure.

You will discover every corner of Fontdouce with this game.

The Adventure Park

Treetop adventure park

It boasts 3 courses for children (3 to 8 years old). One of these courses is exclusively made of zip lines. The 9 other courses, from green to black, are also open to children depending on their size.

Laser game

Children can play in teams safely with our outdoor laser game located at the heart of the forest in the Adventure Park of Fondouce.

Discover paintball without paint, without projectile and of course without pain! Our guns equipped with red laser (completely harmless) will allow you to reach your target until 150 meters. With the different scenarios, you will dive into kinghts' universe.

Price: 7 € / child for the first game,
6 € / child for the following games
